What is Redirection?
If upon review, we find that there are payments or gifts made to organizations that are out of business, lose their tax status (permanently or until further notice), or can no longer accept funds, we will need to send those funds to another eligible entity.
In every client’s CGDS contract, a default organization is selected and is used in the event that redirection needs to occur. Chosen U.S. default organizations must have an acceptable DAF tax status:
- 170(B)(1)(a)(i)
- 170(B)(1)(a)(ii)
- 170(B)(1)(a)(iii)
- 170(B)(1)(a)(iv)
- 170(B)(1)(a)(v)
- 170(B)(1)(a)(vi)
- 509(A)(2)
- NCES Public School
- NCES School District
Default organizations for international credit card and match payments are provided by CyberGrants and they cannot be set at a Grantmaker level, unlike U.S. and Canada CGDS payment redirections. For more information on international CGDS payment redirection, see CAF America CGDS Redirection
There are 2 redirection options that the client can choose from, depending on their programs and preferences.
- The Default Option –Redirection to the default organization occurs automatically when a donor does not respond or when a donor choice option is not enabled. The gift’s original disposition will be retained through the redirection process.
- The Donor Choice Option – Should we find payments or gifts that need to be redirected, the donors will receive an email letting them know that they must log in to their profile and select a new DAF-eligible organization for the funds to go to. Donors have 10 days to select a new organization and will receive a reminder email at 5 days. If the donor does not select an organization within that time frame, the funds will be sent to the default organization that the client has selected in their contract. As with all redirections, the gift’s original disposition will be maintained and not automatically changed to “Approved.”

Gift Redirection Dispositions are preserved
When a gift is redirected, whether to a default or donor-selected organization, its existing disposition is preserved. This means that the redirection process does not automatically approve gifts that have not gone through the intended approval workflows.
This ensures consistent oversight and prevents unintentional approvals, skipped reviews, or billing errors. Below is how different source dispositions are handled when a gift is redirected:

Note: Gifts with dispositions like “Rejected” are not eligible for redirection and are excluded from this process.
