Understanding the CyberGrants Google Maps Extension
The Google Maps Extension for Bonterra’s CyberGrants platform enhances the user experience by integrating intuitive map-based features into our volunteer event functionality. This extension leverages Google Maps’ powerful tools to streamline address entry, improve geographic search capabilities, and create a more user-friendly and visually informative interface during event sign-up and management.
The extension enables address autocompletion and map displays during event creation, sign-up, and search workflows, ensuring employees can locate and sign up for events with ease. By improving how users interact with location-based data, the Google Maps Extension supports broader employee engagement and simplifies event logistics for program administrators.

Key features:
- Address autocompletion - During event creation, administrators can begin typing an address and instantly receive suggested address completions via Google Maps’ Places API.
- Embedded Google Map on sign-up page - When an employee clicks to sign up for a volunteer event, the event details page includes a live map showing the event location.
- Interactive event search map - Users browsing for volunteer opportunities can view an interactive Google Map on the event search page, displaying locations of events that match their filters.
- “Bring Your Own License” model - Those implementing this extension are responsible for securing and maintaining their own Google Maps licensing and granting Bonterra the required API permissions.
Limitations and considerations:
- API licensing requirements - Licensing must account for expected usage volume and daily API call limits. To apply this extension, we require licensed access to the following Google Maps APIs:
- Limited configuration changes - As with all CyberGrants Extensions, only one change per calendar year is allowed, and it must remain within the original scope of the extension.
- User acceptance testing (UAT) - Functionality will only be deployed to production after full customer review and approval through UAT.
- Post-approval modifications - Any requested changes after approval or deployment may result in additional costs and project timeline adjustments.
- Bonterra implementation methodology - Deviating from the prescribed implementation methodology may lead to system inconsistencies or inability to use future features.
