Details

The Google Maps Extension is a standardized add-on within Bonterra’s CyberGrants platform that integrates Google Maps functionality into the volunteer event experience.

It enhances how employees search for, sign up for, and create volunteer opportunities by adding interactive map features and smart address tools directly into the CyberGrants interface.

Core functionality

The extension delivers the following three key enhancements.

Event creation with address autocomplete

When creating a new volunteer event, the address field includes a type-ahead feature. As the event manager begins typing, suggestions appear from the Google Places API. Once an address is selected, the map auto-populates, and the event location is confirmed.

Event search with interactive map

On the event search page, employees can filter for opportunities and view them visually on a map, making it easier to find nearby or convenient volunteer options.

Event sign-up with embedded map

When employees choose to register for a volunteer event, they are taken to a sign-up page that includes a Google Map showing the location of the event, providing helpful geographic context.

Technical specifications

This extension follows a “Bring Your Own License” model. To use this extension, a Google Maps account must be opened, and Bonterra must be provided with the necessary licensed access to the following APIs:

Each API comes with usage limitations (e.g., API call quotas), so licenses must be sized to meet the expected usage volumes. Administrators are responsible for monitoring and maintaining their API access with Google Maps over time.

Dependencies and workflow

  • Proposal type dependency - The Google Maps functionality is tied to specific proposal types used for volunteering workflows.
  • UAT requirement – Program administrators must complete User Acceptance Testing (UAT) before any functionality is moved to production.
  • Change management - Once implemented, any functional changes may result in additional charges and timeline extensions, particularly if they involve adjustments to logic or criteria built into custom procedures.

The Google Maps Extension simplifies event logistics and improves the user experience by bringing powerful geographic tools to CyberGrants’ volunteering functionality.
