Understanding the CyberGrants United Way Extension
Bonterra’s CyberGrants United Way Extension enables seamless integration between your organization’s giving program and the United Way network. This extension automates the display and designation of United Way organizations and their associated focus areas (also referred to as designations), helping donors easily contribute to causes that matter to them.
By aligning with CyberGrants’ standardized methodology, customers can enhance program performance and user experience while ensuring consistency, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
This extension supports the configuration of critical components, including the local United Way organization lookup, United Way designation selection interface, and the ability to set fallback defaults. It supports efficient setup using structured files from United Way and allows for flexible donor choice within a secure, centralized framework.

Key features:
- Automated local United Way lookup enables the system to use donor profile data, such as Home or Work ZIP code—sourced from the Human Resources (HR) data feed—to automatically identify and display the nearest local United Way organization within a defined search radius of up to 50 miles.
- The searchable featured organization portlet enables customers to configure a search-enabled portlet that allows donors to find and select a United Way organization different from their default option.
- Designation selection via iGuide integration provides donors with the option to select a single focus area (designation) tied to the selected United Way organization through a single-select dropdown.
- Standardized files and data models ensure the extension uses structured file inputs, such as the United Way Gift Link File and the iGuide File, to maintain consistency in how organizations and designations are matched and displayed.
- Optional and configurable elements give organizations the flexibility to make the donor search optional or limit selection to only the default local United Way.
- Ongoing maintenance and change flexibility allow customers to request one change to the extension per calendar year, provided the request remains within the scope of the original extension.
Limitations and considerations:
- If a Payroll Match is used, the total match amount is split evenly among all selected organizations; custom distribution is not available.
- Customers are solely responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and cleanliness of the United Way data files. CyberGrants will not clean or manipulate the data.
- No functionality is implemented into the production environment without full customer approval during the User Acceptance Testing (UAT) phase.
- Changes to requirements after development begins may affect the project timeline and could incur additional costs.
